Viruses that jump from animals to humans like COVID-19 will continue to become more common as we transform Mother Earth’s natural habitats into agricultural land. Human’s have converted nearly half of the world’s land into agriculture. Tropical forests have the highest rates of agricultural conversion. This drastic transformation has unleashed the spread of infectious animal-to-human diseases. Scientist and medical professionals worldwide recommend buffer zones around biodiversity-rich forests. This will prevent animal-to-human interaction and disease transmission. Aggressive reforestation is also critical. There is an urgent need to protect existing rain forest from further development and destruction. World wide land conservation policies are essential. All of these steps are a sound investment that will prevent future worldwide pandemics and animal to humans disease. It is just that simple. Thank you Mother Earth for giving us a second chance. Let us hope we take it.
