Viruses that jump from animals to humans like COVID-19 are becoming more common. The dramatic increase is the result of the destruction and conversion of the earth’s natural habitatsinto agricultural land. Nearly half of the world’s land has been converted. This drastic transformation has unleashed the spread of infectious animal-to-human diseases. Tropical forests have the highest rates of agricultural conversion and destruction. Scientist and medical professionals worldwide recommend buffer zones around biodiversity-rich forests to prevent animal-to-human interaction and disease transmission. Aggressive reforestation is critical. There is an urgent need to protect existing rain forest from further development and destruction. World wide land conservation policies are essential. All of these steps are a sound investment to prevent future worldwide pandemics. Thank you Mother Earth for giving us a second chance. Let us hope we take it.
