The Greek myth of “Procrustes and his bed” is a story worth telling. On the road to Athens in ancient Greece a person had to pass by Procrustes and his bed. Procrustes would place a person on his bed. He would cut off any part of them that did not fit his expectations. If a person was too short for his bed. He would stretch them until they did fit. He would continue the process of adjusting people until they met all of his expectations. When we allow ourselves to be defined by the expectations of others. We cut off, stretch out and bury parts of our self. The behavior of giving away our power takes root and steadily grows. It is just that simple.
