We Have To Be Carefully Taught..
As I explored my world in childhood. I routinely shared my experiences with My Mother. On this day she was standing at the kitchen sink washing dishes. It was her style to continue her task. So lessons learned became a part of my everyday life. Did you have lunch at the Smith’s today? My five-year-old mind started searching. How did she know and why? Did you bring other children with you? Yes, to both questions was my reply. The children’s parents called me. They are upset. Over what! What did I do wrong? She never stopped washing the dishes. Conveying to me the unimportance of their phone calls. You must have noticed the Smiths have a different color skin. Yea, so? Some people do not like them because of that. What???? People do not like them because of their skin color. Yes. Now, she turned. She looked straight into my eyes. Continue to play with the Smith children. Go to their home and bring them here for play and meals. Just don’t bring the other children with you. Okay, Mom! I shouted. As I ran off feeling comfortable, secure, and enlightened. That conversation still resonates in my mind, heart and soul. My Mother gave me a great gift that day! The courage and freedom to embrace and respect difference. It is just that simple.

Y is a crooked letter……
From early childhood my words were heard and valued. My Mother told this story often. Always for my benefit. “When I tell my daughter to do something”. She ask. Why Mother? I was launched on my quest for answers. She would listen to me giving serious consideration to my questions. Often, I sensed both her bemusement and frustration. As I asked question after question. Repeatedly saying “why? why? why? Finally, she would say, “Because Y is a crooked letter”. Temporarily satisfied. I wondered off. To contemplate how Y is a crooked letter. My quests for answers. Taught me to seek my own counsel. Hear and value the voice streaming from my thoughts and feeling. Draw my own conclusions. Make sound decisions and problem solve. I mastered the skills of thinking. A Mother’s Son….
Growing up, I would shadow my Mother. As she moved through the world. For me, these were journeys of discovery and learning. She was preparing me for life. Often, she would motion with her head towards a male saying. Now that is “A Mother’s Son”. Her voice was filled with admiration. She was pointing out males. Whose core is fueled by Maternal energy and wisdom. Their self-confidence is powered by respect. Males comfortable in the duality of their nature. The duality that defines all of us.
